Step on the scale and chart your current weight. Decide your target weight for the end of your dieting process. Now you have a goal in mind. If it's 20, 30 or 100 pounds you want to lose, remember that it took you time to gain that much weight, and give yourself ample time to lose weight.

To get the weight off and keep it off, you'll need to change your eating and exercise habits. Plan to eat 4 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals. Try to include mostly fruits, vegetables and lean meats in your meals, and cut down on the starches like rice, cereals and breads. If you eat grains, make sure they are whole grains. Avoid juices, alcohol, sugary drinks and desserts.

Begin and commit to an exercise program that suits your personality. If you have dogs, it can be something as easy as walking the dogs at least 3 times a week. If you like to swim, join your local YMCA. Start your exercise routine slowly and build up more time to give your body time to adjust.

Avoid between-meal snacking. If you have to snack, make sure the snack is filling and nutritous like yogurt, fresh fruit or nuts.
